Syria Mobile Phone Films Festival 2014
“In the beginning was the camera”: in coincidence with the third anniversary of the Syrian revolution, the events of the Syrian festival of mobile films will begin in the free areas of Syria on the 15th of March 2014 where the festival will give a chance for the filmmakers and the directors who want to show their films until 6 August 2014. It’s expected for the participated films to be showed in a number of Syrian areas and in a variety of platforms around the world from 6 to 10 of September 2014 where the competition will be on 6 different awards.
This year, the festival opens the doors for all mobile films which presented by Arab and Syrian directors and by the foreign directors who would like to discuss issues related to the Arab region. The festival doesn’t require any age conditions or subscription fees except the technical term advertised on the website. At the festival’s first session, films will compete for 6 awards, (1000 $) for each one, one is for one-minute-film, one for short recording film, one for short dramatic film, one for the journalist citizen video and one of the arbitration committee. Moreover, all participated films will compete for “the spectator eye” award for which all films nominate automatically, and the audience grants them through voting on the website for the best film. The Syrian revolution have revealed about many talents in various fields during the last two years, notably in the visual and media field, and the mobile cameras formed a basic feature of them, so that means of struggle by mobile cameras have become a universal means of expression. From this perspective, the festival seeks to highlight the visual productive of the mobile as an artistic value as well as its informational value in order to encourage new talents which are trying to make their dreams, and to encourage freedom of speech and expression. The festival will be held this year in partnership with Alshare3 foundation of media and development.
Competitions: The films are competing according to the desire of the participant in the following competitions: the competition of one-minute mobile film which includes recording, narrative or artistic experimental films. The competition of short recording mobile film which includes the recording films, and their duration range between 1- 12 minutes. The competition of short narrative mobile film which includes recording films that exceed one minute. The competition of the journalist citizen which includes press reports and news stories and its duration doesn’t exceed 3 minutes by mobile phone. The arbitration committee’s prize: awarded by the arbitration committee for one of the participated films. The competition of “the spectator eye” to which all the participated films will nominate automatically, and which depends on the audience voting through the website or facebook. Note, the participated have to mention in the application which competition he would like to participate. The arbitration committee includes a number of Arab and Syrian filmmakers, video artists, journalists, directors and activists and their names will be announced about during the announcement of the results.
The maximum length of the films has to be 12 minutes. The filmmakers are allowed to use any montage way whether by using their mobile phone or by using their computers or any other instrument. The festival has the right to exclude any film that has great technical problems and that will be discussed with the participant, In addition to exclude any film that has racial or abuser substance. Dealing with the director, the festival has the right to make technical modifications on the sound and the picture to be conformed to the show qualifications on big screens. The participants have the right to talk about their experience through a short video of 1:5 minute ultimately. Awards: will be distributed as the following: 1000$ for the one-minute film, 1000$ for the recording film, 1000$ for the fancy film, 1000$ for the journalist citizen, 1000$ from the arbitration committee and 1000$ for the spectator eye award. The qualifications of the participation: The participation of this competition is available for all Syrians inside and outside Syria as well as we welcome the participants from other Arab countries. Also, the festival welcomes the participations by foreigners with one requirement that the film must revolve topics concerned with the Syrian issues. There is no fee and no age condition to participate the festival. Filling out the application form which includes information about the film, and the festival adheres not to mention the name of director if he wants that. Any film without accompaniment form will be refused.
Technical qualifications: The film has to be by a mobile camera or a tablet, and films that made by other modes will be out automatically. The participant should send a snapshot of his film without any modification (raw material) or changing in the extension in order to be an evidence of using the mobile camera not other instruments
.f the awards can be loaded on the festival’s website and facebook. The copyright is protected for the director and ultimately 30 seconds of the film are allowed to be used as objects of promotion and media. The participants could use the link on the festival’s website to facilitate the promotion of voting. The festival has the right to show the winning films in other cultural spaces and festivals for non-profit purposes and in coordination with the director. The festival team adheres to provide technical consults during the execution of the film and that depends on the participant request.
